It’s summertime in Nova Scotia, the days are longer, warmer and full of sunshine, and for some, that means business slows down. For us at the Chamber, it means planning.

So what has happened in the past year or so? Our panel — a group of five experts with varying backgrounds — went through some our member’s questions, including the biggest one: What about the stigma?

International students are an ideal way to grow our workforce: they are well-educated, they speak English or French, they have adapted to Canadian society and they are familiar with our culture.

The city’s five-year economic plan launched in 2016 aims to grow the population from 416,000 to 470,000 by 2021, and to 550,000 by 2031. The target for GDP growth is from $18 billion to $30 billion over those same 15 years.

GTO provides a salary incentive to small businesses, start-ups, social enterprises, and non-profits who commit to hiring a recent post-secondary graduate. Employers receive 25% of a grad’s first year salary and 12.5% of the grad’s second year salary.
