South Shore Veterinary Hospital Benefits from Graduate to Opportunity Program

Department of Labour and Advanced Education

Wanda Publicover, Manager of the South Shore Veterinary Clinic has seen first-hand the enthusiasm and impact that young talent brings to a business.  Wanda has hired not one, but three recent graduates of the Atlantic Veterinary College, through the Graduate to Opportunity Program.

“Things are always changing in medicine,” says Wanda. “The recent grads that join our team are bringing fresh techniques that they have just learned in college. They know how to use the newest diagnostic equipment, and they share this knowledge with vets who have been in the field for a longer time. In return, the seasoned vets share their knowledge gained from experience with the new grads.”
Dr. Alyssa Brosha from Antigonish is one of these grads. She completed her doctorate from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2015, and joined the South Shore Veterinary Hospital in the spring of 2016.

“There is still a lot to learn on the job,” says Alyssa. “But the team and the support network here are fantastic. I have mentors with expertise that regularly share and consult on cases.’

Alyssa enjoys the variety in medicine that she gets to practice. Her passions include small animal wellness and surgery, as well as cattle. The same day she was interviewed by the Province, she de-horned a bull on a farm visit, and led an information session on bacterial infections that dogs are susceptible to.

The Graduate to Opportunity program’s salary incentive made it easier for the South Shore Veterinary Clinic to hire Alyssa.  25% of her first-year salary and 12.5% of her second year salary are covered by the Province of Nova Scotia.

Without supportive funding, it can be challenging for small businesses to provide career opportunities to young people. However, GTO has helped Alyssa land a job in her chosen career field, right here in her home province.

Her energy has not gone un-noticed.

“Alyssa brings an openness to change and new ideas, says Wanda. “The grads we hire work well in a team environment and we need that. We are a big clinic.”

Graduate to Opportunity helps build strong workforces and retains young well-educated young people like Alyssa in Nova Scotia. For more information about Graduate to Opportunity click here.
