I’m a big thrift shopper. It allows me to have a much bigger
wardrobe than I would otherwise be “allowed” to spend money on. And when I find
a thrift sale that also allows me to support other women in my city, well… sign
me up!

That’s how I found myself visiting the newly refurbished
Dress for Success Halifax offices at 2016 Gottingen Street recently. Three
times a year, the organization hosts a clothing sale to raise money for their
local programs. Donations that do not fit their needs for their core function
of providing professional attire for disadvantaged women – a treasure trove of
gently used shoes, clothes, scarves, purses and jewellery – are sold to the
general public at the sale.

The mission of Dress for Success, an international
not-for-profit organization, is to “promote the economic independence of
disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and
the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life,”
according to their website. Dress for Success
Halifax has been in operation locally since 2001 and helps approximately 300
women per year.

Dress for Success Halifax does not receive any annual

funding, and therefore relies on donations and fundraisers to run its programs
and keep the doors of its offices open. It costs about $200 to put each woman
through all of the programs.

The offices have been recently upgraded through generous
donations of work stations and dividers from Office Interiors, as well as
flooring from Centura Flooring and Wisequest Contracting. “Now the women coming
in to get a new professional look can feel like they’re coming into a
professional space,” enthuses Executive Director, Brenda Saunders/Todd when we
talk about the new look.

After spending a couple of hours chatting with Brenda and
looking through the clothing for sale, well… let’s just say I contributed
enough to cover half the cost of a woman’s program expenses, but I came out
with a great loot bag including red Steve Madden wedges, some Stella & Dot
jewellery, and a lime green blazer!

Does that sound good to you? Check out the next clothing
sale, happening Friday, October 25th from 10 am until 6 pm for
“Clients & Friends” of Dress for Success Halifax and October 26th
from 8 am until 4 pm for the general public!
