Once a quarter, staff at the Halifax Chamber of Commerce gather for a staff day – a day of either staff development (training, team building, and more) or fun.
This time around, we decided to add a little bit of community service into the mix by cleaning up the garbage along Windmill Road, in front of the Chamber office. We registered our cleanup with Clean Nova Scotia’s Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up program and they sent us the supplies needed – garbage and recycling bags, gloves, promotional posters, and a tracking sheet to report our activity back to Clean Nova Scotia.
Eleven Chamber staff members spent two hours picking up trash, and we collected 32 bags of garbage and 3 bags of recycling!
After cleaning up (and very thorough hand-washing!!) we enjoyed a potluck lunch, with lots of delicious dishes including casseroles, salads, homemade brown rolls from Policy Analyst Eric Blake and brownies from PR Coordinator Melissa Muise.
For our afternoon team building fun event, local artist Annemarie Johnson of Trompe L’oeil Studios came in and did an art lesson for staff. Each staff member chose an image to recreate as they learned the art techniques. Several team members chose an image of a dandelion gone to seed, and each came up with their own version of it. Many others chose to be inspired by artwork by Anne Magill whose beautiful dreamy works are, shall we say, forgiving when it comes to newbies practicing and being inspired!
Each Chamber staff member came away with their very own canvas – even those who have never picked up a paintbrush before and who considered themselves to be “not artistic”!
Does your organization host staff days? What kinds of things do you do when you get together? Does your company invest in education, staff development, team building, or something fun for its staff? Let us know! We’d love to hear stories from our members.
