10-digit dialling and new area code coming in 2014 to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

The ever increasing popularity of new telecom services and the growing demand for new telephone numbers will soon result in the 902 area code reaching capacity.

As a result, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has determined that customers will need to adopt 10-digit dialling for all local calls within the 902 area code as of August 23, 2014. In addition, starting in November 2014, a new area code will be introduced – area code 782. These changes are designed to handle increased demand, but will not result in any changes to local dialling rates.

DSM is already prepared…
The DSM Telecom network is configured for 10-digit local dialling and would encourage everyone to update their telecommunications equipment and features, including:

  • Wireless phones and other wireless devices
  • Speed dial lists
  • Telephone options and functions (such as call forwarding, call blocking, call display, etc.)
  • Fax machines
  • Modems and internet dial-up systems
  • Equipment for hearing impaired
  • Alarm and security systems (Please note that many security systems dial a pre-programmed number in case of emergency.  If you have any questions, please contact your security provider.)
  • Elevator Phones

Key dates to remember

  • August 23, 2014: Introduction of 10-digit dialling. Calls made without 10-digit dialling will be intercepted with a system message before being completed. Some data transmissions may be disrupted if equipment is not reprogrammed by this date.
  • November 16, 2014: 10-digit local dialling becomes mandatory. Calls dialled without the area code will not be completed.
  • November 30, 2014: Telephone numbers in the new area code 782 will gradually be introduced in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
